I was very lucky to know Cate -- a well known wedding planner and an old friend of my familay -- when I was wondering how to start the career as a wedding planner 5 years ago. "Are you serious?" I still remember the delightness within her voice about my question of how to become a wedding planner. Then she spend hours on explaining the key issues on starting a wedding consultant business to me. Since that afternoon she has been my mentor until today.

If it was not Cate leading me into that door I would never become a well-recognized wedding planner today. As my way to say thanks it's my turn to help people with the question of how to become a wedding planner as Cate helped me.

Firstly, it's not hard and you don't need learn much, quite simply you can have a business name and start handing out your business cards.

Would this work? No, and the reason to this is quite simple, the industry is a very close-knit bunch and have a lot of respect for each other and pride in their work. So as the very first understanding to make you step forward, you need to work you way in and gain your respect.

Start you research today and become an expert in the field know the ins and outs of the bridal industry. Attend bridal shows and offer to do volunteer work. This is a great way to get your foot in the door. Actually I did help the wedding planner in my neighborhood optimize people's wedding budgets before I took over all the aspects and became a wedding planner myself.

You can also apply for a job at you local bridal shop and train to become the best employee of the month working you way up. This is so important as you have real contacts with brides. Start collating information on how everyone is booking for their photos, where their flowers are being purchased from, who has a good name and who unfortunately hasn't etc.

You are now a walking expert on how to become a wedding planner and it is time to meet and greet vendors that you would like to recommend to future clients. Have confidence to hand a portfolio of our credentials to them and explain you are now in the Wedding Planning business.

Remember this when you are make your service sources list: As a Professional Wedding Planner you will save the bridal party money while providing them with a much more impressive wedding event. I will always keep in mind that get the best service with the most reasonable price should be the number one rule of a double win wedding planner, both for you and your clients.

Then start small and start planning friends and relatives weddings or even yourselves. This will help you start thinking from the angle of bridals. Again pay special attention to the budget and test your business sources. It finally tells who is more competitive in the wedding planning market. Actually once a couple thanked me months later because I helped them get a amazing honey moon trip by saving 30% of their event spends.

Don not bother too much about the advertising. Focus on what you can do for the couple and their families. To my experience since you are always doing your best for people you will get references from them as return. Word travels fast and before you know it you will get a call from a friend of your happy friend.

Hey Max, Joy. We met right before the ceremony. I just want to say today's wedding is really amazing. I love every minute of it, expecially the "surprise moment" you did for Judi's Parents!

I feel I will need your further suggestions later on... but at this point I've downloaded Cate's guide and will let you know how it goes. Take care.
